Begin 08/06 - Life-Sized Sculptures Project

The following pictures illustrate the process involved in creating a life-sized bronze sculpture.
New photos will be posted as steps of the process are completed.

Begin mold making: remove all parts to be molded separately

Shim to part molds.
Apply mold material, several layers


Continue applying layers of mold material to all sections of the sculpture


Apply layers of light-weight shell over
all molded surfaces

Remove all sections of shell
from mold


Remove all silicon molds from sculpture


Begin wax working: pour/paint wax positives
for all molds


Chase, sprue, and vent all wax positives


Begin ceramic shell work: apply multiple
coats of ceramic shell


Begin casting: load shell into kiln,
melt out wax to produce hollow vessel


Melt and prep bronze


Pour metal into empty
ceramic shell molds


Knock off ceramic shell


Sandblast remaining shell


Rough chase individual castings


Begin assembly and rough chase seams


Rough chase all seams


Assemble parts and chase all seams


Assemble parts and chase all seams


Prepare sculpture and base for mounting


Prepare sculpture and base for mounting


Sandblast finished sculpture


Sandblasted finish, ready for patina
